Longitudinal partitions

1890-1920

The use of timber frames for interior walls ceases towards the end of the 1800s, partly due to legal requirements. Thereafter, the longitudinal beam-supporting interior walls are constructed of brickwork.

In older buildings, beams are laid on wall plates, as with exterior walls, or on smaller sections of (hard)wood, and later still, directly onto the wall – in each case to avoid weakening the brickwork’s load-bearing capacity.
